Flat roofs aren't really flat. They are built with a slight slope so water runs to drains, scuppers and gutters. When water sits instead, the roof wears faster, leaks sooner and carries weight it wasn't designed to carry. Here is when standing water becomes a problem and how it gets fixed.
When standing water counts as ponding
The usual rule of thumb in roofing is 48 hours: water still on the roof two days after the rain stops, in weather that would normally dry it, is ponding. Even when the water has dried, ponding leaves evidence behind: dirt rings, algae or a ring of debris marking where it sat.
What causes ponding
Clogged drains, scuppers and gutters
The most common cause and the cheapest fix. In the Miami Valley, fall leaves, seed pods and wind-blown debris bury drain strainers every year. One blocked drain can back water up across a whole section of roof.
Not enough slope
Building codes generally require new low-slope roofs to slope at least 1/4 inch per foot for most membranes. Many older buildings were built nearly dead-flat, or with drains placed at high points.
Deck deflection and settling
Steel and wood decks sag between supports over time, especially under heavy rooftop units or after a deck has been weakened by rust or rot from old leaks.
Layers and repairs
Multiple roof layers, thick patches and added rooftop equipment create dams and low spots that water can't get past.

Why it matters
- Faster membrane wear: standing water speeds up UV and heat aging and breaks down some coatings and seam adhesives.
- More leaks: any small opening under a pond leaks constantly instead of only during rain.
- Freeze damage: ponds that freeze and thaw work seams and flashings open.
- Weight: water is heavy. Deep ponding on a deflecting deck can get worse each storm.
- Debris and growth: dirt, algae and plants hold moisture against the roof.
How ponding gets fixed
| Fix | When it is used |
|---|---|
| Clear and maintain drains | Always the first step; part of every maintenance visit |
| Add drains or scuppers | Water collects in areas with no outlet |
| Crickets and saddles | Divert water around units and between drains |
| Tapered insulation | Builds slope into the roof during replacement or recover |
| Fill low spots | Localized ponding on an otherwise sound roof |
| Deck repair | Rusted, rotted or deflecting deck sections |
| Silicone coating | Protects the membrane on minor ponding; doesn't remove water |
Fix drainage when you replace
A roof replacement is the cheapest time to fix ponding for good, because tapered insulation and new drains go in while the roof is open. Laying a new membrane over the same flat spots guarantees the same early failure. See replacement costs and recover vs. replacement.
The bottom line
Water still there after 48 hours is a problem worth fixing. Start with the drains, then deal with slope. See our commercial roof repair and, for homes, flat roof repair.
